Not too sure about how Trazadone works, but Elavil would likely exibit a similar sedative effect as the Trazadone, but may do so by a different mechanism.
As far as Elavil vs SSRI's, Elavil is Tricylic antidepressant that effects multiple neurotransmitters in the brain where as SSRI's like Paxil..ect primarily affect Serotonin.
Tricylic antidepressants have an effect on uplifting (feel good....energetic) neurotransmitters, so although Elavil has a sedative component and is believed to affect Serotonin, it should affect the neurotransmitters that Wellbutrin and Adderal also affect while providing a sedative effect at night. Surmontil is another Tricylic that has a sedative component.
In theory this sounds like a practical alternative, but as we know we are not test tubes, and to each his or her own experience.
