The thread you pointed to was good. But I did some snooping around the rest of the site and ran across some really apalling opinions, the most nauseous being the "You can only get better when you _want_ to get better" line ;)
I once made an appointment with student health services in graduate school asking for an appointment with a psychiatrist. I had just come from the east coast to California and needed someone to manage my meds and generally look after me. There was a mixup and when I came for my appointment I noted that the nameplate on the door was Joe Bloggs, PhD. I told him that a mistake had been made and that I needed to see someone who could manage my meds for chronic depression, and panic disorder. He had the unmitigated gall to ask me "Do you want to get better or do you just want to keep taking pills?" I'm not a violent person but at the time I felt like smacking him. I controlled myself nobly instead and said something along the lines of "thankfully, most psychiatrists don't share your views", and left.
