Why isn't Trazodone used for anxiety?

Posted by Rick on September 20, 2002, at 10:51:14

Because she knows I post to Psycho-Babble, a friend has asked me to pose this question and the next. (*I* am sticking with Klonopin!)

Because it's so sedating, the AD Trazodone is used almost entirely as a sleep aid. But while I've heard it's not exactly the world's most effective antidepressant -- especially for men -- I understand it does have anxiolytic properties.

So why isn't a larger, theraputic dose taken at night to work as monotherapy that helps both anxiety (or anxious depression) AND insomnia?
Other short-half-life AD's, including sister compound Serzone, are often given all at bedtime to good effect.

And Traz is cheap!

Thanks in adance for any thoughts,
Rick
