5-HTP horrible for IBS

Posted by Eddie Sylvano on September 17, 2002, at 10:28:44

Has anyone else noticed this? For the last 5 years, I've had varying GI problems that were undignosable (hence the IBS label). I occasionally have intense flare-ups that double me over in jaw-clenching pain for an hour or so, and could never find a pattern in it. I realized last week, though, that I could reliably bring on an attack by taking a 5-HTP supplement. Within 3 hours or so of ingesting some, the pain would present.
I've seen a few studies that associate increased serotonin levels in the digestive tract to exacerbation of symptoms in women (why do women get all the medical attention?), and I beleive there's even a new drug that addresses IBS via serotonin antagonism.
Anyway, just curious to see if anyone else has experienced this.
