There is something very soothing about Neurontin. Higher doses (800-3600mg/day) are often used to offer withdrawl to addicts. Give caution to those prone to seizures, as the FDA limited approval to these patients up to 2100mg.
Neurontin is safe, and benzos aren't too bad either-- that's not the reason why I suggest Neurontin (so hopefully I won't get the klonopin army against me, as if I -don't- use the stuff myself)
It not only calms, but soothes, in this odd way. Soothing medicine is interesting to me- my first dose of Celexa that I took immediately after walking out of the pharmacy hit me with a repetitive line from John Taylor, "how great it feels to be loved by you" 20 minutes later. It was repeating in my head, over and over, as I felt a very joyish rush in my body that made me feel like a happy little kid. It was odd because I never had depression, and was taking it for anxiety (which I don't think did much).
So maybe a lot of these addicts need a drug that soothes as it helps them to withdraw. Klono doesn't provide that, as effective as it is to calm a patient. Besides, don't you routinely give them Clonidine shots in those detox clinics? That should be enough for withdrawl. Add Neurontin, and the two combined should help a lot.
