Hi Kelly,
I've been on Nardil now for 3 months. I suffer from migraines as well, so have been on the MAOI diet for...a couple of years now.
Tips on prepared food:
Avoid all protein extracts and hydrolyzed proteins. Yeast extracts are included in this category as well.
Soybean oil is not a problem, nor are any other oils that I can think of. Soy sauce can be used in moderation - for me anyway. I discovered that there are two kinds of soy sauce. One is made with regular soy beans and the other is made with hydrolyzed soy protein extract. The one with the extract as the base is the really bad one. It also tastes nasty.
Avoid pastes, like raisin paste and tomato paste. They use raisin paste in condiments.
I have found that Jack cheese is not a problem. I eat lots of cottage cheese with no problem. Cream cheese is good too. I don't really care for the processed cheese slices, but they are on the okay menu.
Be careful with salad dressing, and condiments in general. Read the ingredients on everything!
I once decided to have pancakes, from a mix, and didn't even think about reading the label (very stupid of me - I always read the labels, it just didn't occur to me to read a label for pancake mix). Made the pancakes, and shortly thereafter had a mild hypertensive episode. Then my daughter grabbed the package and said "Mom, this has buttermilk in it! And soy flour." Fortunately my BP didn't go dangerous, just real high. 136/96 my BP is normally 117/70ish. Scared me good. Now I read every label, even when I know the ingredients.
If I think of any other things to watch out for I'll post ya. Or you can email me.
Take care and good luck. The diet's not that bad actually. The really bad reactions come from over the counter meds. Basically don't take ANYTHING with consulting your doctor or pharmacist.
Morgana, BPII - Nardil, Lamictal & Verapamil. I also take Claritin D for allergies, even though it has a decongestant, it is okay for me. The doctor had to okay it though. My neurologist is the one who prescribed the Nardil and he looked up all my meds and made sure none of them conflicted. I have asthma too, so we have to be real careful.
Sorry this post got so long. :)
