In order to patent something it has to be new.
So who funds the research? Some is done, government funded.
The reason I wouldn't want to see a separate place to discuss nutritional or herbal or fringe therapies is that anything nutritional or herbal is still chemical... not necessarily different from patentable medicines except in whether they are patentable. Everything we eat is medicine -- in a way. Exercise is medicine in that it releases beta-endorphins and lowers cortisol, etc. So its a fine line.
