My pdoc told me that for some people using it as a mood stabilizer, Lamictal doesn't kick in until around 600mg., and some of his patients need to go higher for good effect. He told me the amount that some epileptics go up to- I don't remember the exact figure- but it was at least 1200mg.
I take 300mg, works well for me, and I also take Neurontin which balances it well. I take a very small amount of Depakote (250mg), and Depakote somehow potentiates Lamictal, so my 300mg is probably the same as a higher dose of Lamictal for someone else who is not taking any Depakote.
The trick for me with Lamictal was increasing by small amounts (12.5mg) very slowly (every 2 wks.). This kept away side effects and allowed me to figure out what the right dosage was- for me.
