Prozac and Weight Gain after 6 months

Posted by Krazy Kat on June 6, 2002, at 12:26:19

I wanted to post this months ago, but was in a deep depression after a manic episode caused or exacerbated by Prozac

Last fall, I noticed a very sudden and rapid weight gain. Something like 20 pounds in two weeks. I attributed it the Depakote I was taking at the time. I had been taking Depakote for about 3 months, Prozac for about 6 months. I believe my Dep. dose was 1500mg, my Prozac 50 or 60 mg.

My pdoc said it was the Prozac. Sure enough, after stopping the Prozac because of the mania, but continuing on the Depakote, my weight stabilized and I lost a "few" pounds.

He said he's seen this in patients - a sudden and drastic gain in weight after about 6 months on Prozac. For some, they'll lose weight first, and then gain. (That's what happened to me).

Just FYI.
