The true stimulants tend to have a bigger therapeutic window.

In order to get ADD symptoms treated or get lots more energy out of ephedrine you would have to take such a high dose that it might backfire by causing an increased pulse, high blood pressure, stomach problems etc. Whereas the stimulants cause more brain effects with less side effects. So if you feel nothing from ephedrine or feel yucky side effects, that doesn't mean stimulants would have the same effect. However, if you do get a calmed and more collected focussed feeling on ephedrine, that is an effect that the stimulants would most likely also have for you.
