"Citalopram, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, has beneficial effects on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis regulation, the sympathetic nervous system and glucose tolerance--creating weight loss in healthy men according to Swedish researchers.
In their double-blind trial, 16 healthy male volunteers with moderate obesity were treated with citalopram titrated to 40 mg/day and placebo for 6 months each in a crossover fashion, with a 2-month washout period between treatments. The men had no evidence of depression, but had reduced morning cortisol levels.
Investigators believe that the effects observed on weight were not secondary to an effect of citalopram on mood or on food intake."
