Hello,
I am on tegretol for cyclothymia and I have not been on it very long, only 2-3 months so far. The fuzziness I referred to is quite hard to explain really, I guess a lot of the time it can just be a feeling of drowsiness, like the kind you get from antihistamines (if you've ever taken them you'll know what I mean). Other times it can be forgetfullness, like I'm my 90 year old granny with dementia. I wander around from room to room trying to remember what I was doing or where I was going. (I suppose I am grossly exaggerating in referring to dementia but it's all I can compare it to). These feelings are not present all the time, but visit me from time to time whenever they see fit, Dizzy fairies my sister calls them. (She is on the same meds).
The weight gain is a bummer, as I am already overweight but I would say I gained around 6 or 7 pounds when I started on the tegretol, it has sort of evened out slightly and I haven't gained any more, but I haven't lost any either! My doc says that everything should settle down soon, so I am keeping my fingers crossed. One thing that has settled down is my menstrual cycle. When I first started on the tegretol my periods went haywire and I had 3 periods in one month! Now it has gone back to normal and are regular again. I don't mean to alarm you by that, it is only because I am on a contraceptive pill and tegretol interferes with it, hence the problem with my periods. This problem has evened out and is no longer any bother. I am hoping that all the other sideaffects will do the same.
I don't know if this will be any help to you, but if you want to to know anything else just ask. I will answer what I can.
Take care,Fiona
