I live on the other end of the state and don't know much about Pittsburgh-area psychiatrists. The University of Pittsburgh Dept. of Psychiatry (WPIC, Stanley Center, STEP-BD regional site) is outstanding and one of the leading recipients of research funding. Drs. Michael E. Thase, David Kupfer, Allan Mallinger and Roy Chengappa are some of the "name" psychiatrists there, but except for Dr. Thase (super for affective disorders), I doubt if they're seeing patients. A good idea is to call the Dept. of Psychiatry and ask for a consultation or referral. Another way is to phone or e-mail the psychiatrist yourself. "Name" psychiatrists will refer, or consult and then refer, or if you're lucky they'll be accepting new patients. Dr. Thase is accepting new patients, and he's *got* to be one of the best anywhere. I don't know if it's permissible to post his e-mail and office phone, but you'll find it at AMA Physican Select: http://www.ama-assn.org/aps/amahg.htm
Search by specialty (psychiatry) and enter Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, and 15213 for zip code. (If you don't enter the zip code to narrow down the search, too many names will appear and it won't them at all.) You'll see Dr. Thase pop up with his info. Also, Dr. Chengappa is very nice and answers his email.
Personally, I don't like university clinics and prefer well-trained private practice psychiatrists who might be affiliated with the university -- or at least are up-to-date.Good luck,
Blue
