BPD/Head Banging/Seizure Activity?

Posted by PattyG on April 1, 2002, at 8:52:38

We just had our 4th Annual Community In-Service and one of the speakers was Dr. Bryan Hudson who is a Neuropsychologist. He teaches at the University of Indianapolis and has a private practice at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. During the course of his presentation on "the brain," he spoke of head injuries that are often overlooked (even by x-ray, scans, etc.) and that eventually cause problems for an individual because of scar tissue and its continued growth.

Something clicked for me and I spoke with him afterwards and presented this hypothetical situation: You have a child who is a "head banger" in the crib - hits his head so hard there is a ridge (regular x-ray shows nothing, pediatrician says all they know is that it's a sign of intelligence) - this child as *always* demonstrated symptoms of sadness, but problems progressed on into serious depression and conduct problems. Eventually, diagnosed with Major Depression, Dysthymia, and Borderline Personality Disorder. My interest in this issue of the growing scar tissue is in wondering IF this could be the cause for my son's seizure activity that began two years ago - he said, "Yes." He's had a CatScan, MRI, MRA, EEG and all sorts of blood work - all negative. Dr.Hudson says he needs a sleep deprived EEG (which we'll mention to the neurologist) - of course, I forgot to ask, THEN WHAT?! I also remembered that last year's speaker, Dr. Gregory Lester, listed "head banging" as an early precursor to BPD - your thoughts, anyone?
