Recovery from Set-backs that cause depression

Posted by Leanore on March 18, 2002, at 6:11:19

I was diagnosed with cyclothymia after I had a
clinical depression 8 or 9 year ago and given
lithium, but I felt like cardboard so decided to go
it on my own. My highs are when I can work and my
lows are periods when I can't work. I always slept
soundly all night before and now I intermittently
can't get to sleep or I wake at 3:00AM. I medicate
myself with milk and that often works. I have
nominal aphasia & memory loss which I hate. I do
political work, art and gardening. The political
work is quite stressful and I have been doing it
for five years. I have an opportunity to accomplish
a project with people in my neighborhood which takes
a lot of planning, and I am on a county advisory
committee related to the project. My point of view
on the committee is antithetic to the rest of the
members and though we all theoretically are neutral
the reality is just the opposite. I have trouble
keeping stable and tend to get depressed. We don't
have enough money to send me to a psychiatrist to
get medication and Health and Welfare doesn't take
people like me--I'm not sick enough. I am a ceramic
artist and sell at juried craft shows, but I have
trouble having too many interests and I'm vastly
oversubscribed with no hope in sight. I also
rehearse every week with two chorales. I don't get
much art work done with all my volunteer activities,
but we need the money. I need a lot more exercise
but I end up on the computer instead. My husband is
wonderful with all this. I surely would like to
keep my creativity and not be cardboard, but over-
come the depression, fear, anxiety I feel,
especially when someone on my county committee
does something to set back my project. Does anyone
have any suggestions? I started taking thyroid
meds which helped a lot and I take vitamins, E, C,
Calcium, B complex, Folic Acid/B 12, Gingko & C0Q10
when I can afford it. I gather St. Johnswort and
make my own tincture and take it when I'm depressed
and it helps, believe it or not--a placebo? Has
anyone ever heard of acupuncture--scalp sticking--
for nominal aphasia? I surely would like to get
rid of that, and by some miracle recover my used-to
-be excellent memory.
