My dog, Dilly, is 15 and has been getting progressively more addled. About three months ago, she deteriorated sharply - waking up several times a night to pee in the bedroom, incontinent in the house, unable to negotiate stairs, and just generally dazed and confused. We took her to the vet and he did several tests and pronounced her physically healthy. So he put her on 10 mg selegiline (she weighs 35 lbs) and said wait four weeks. Sure enough, almost four weeks to the day, she started sleeping through the night, asking to go out, eating normally, handling stairs, recognizing people and places, and slipping back into her old routines. Pretty impressive. It's marketed as Anipryl for dogs. Not sure about cats, though - they often respond very differently to medications. Aspirin is fine for a dog, but very toxic for cats.
