I was thinking Acamprosate may be useful for
bipolar disorder and made some earlier posts to
this notion. It is a carier molecule for
the amino acid Taurine. Taurine is a naturally
occuring substance in the brain. It is an NMDA
antagonist and a Gabaergic substance.
It has been used extensively for alcoholism, but
I saw uses in tolerance for other medicines and
possibly bipolar.Subsequent to this thought, I found research abstracts
finding that Lamictal increases brain concentrations
of Taurine. Interesting.I just found this pilot study for the use of Acamprosate
for bipolar disorder:http://www.bipolarnetwork.org/new_site/Clinical/Acamprosate.asp
I think this medicine could be a useful adjunct and
may explain part of the mystery surrounding the effectiveness
of Lamictal (as well as its monoamine reuptake properties?).Whats nice about Acamprosate is that it is
introducing into the brain an amino acid that is
already a naturally occuring substance, hence probably
low side effects.-John
