Lithium Absorption and Excretion

Posted by Squiggles on February 14, 2002, at 15:53:58

I read in Kraeplin's book that during periods
of mania and depression, uric acid (I think that
is the substance) was retained and excreted
according to the state the patient was in.

Somewhere (sorry for being so vague) I read
that lithium carbonate is also witheld and
excreted according to the manic and depressive
state.

To Kraeplin this indicated that manic depression
was really a metabolic disease - interesting
thought --

Does anyone know if this has been tested or
verified in current studies - i do myself notice
a distinct difference in saltiness which may
be related to this.

Sigh, I await the portable li-detector - it
can't be that hard to manufacture.
