Adult ADHD Bipolar II are commonly confused

It is hard to tell the difference between Adult ADHD & Bipolar II, they share many similar symptoms. I am having the same problem, I don't know which of these is my problem (I also cannot tolerate even SSRI antidepressants w/o a benzo b/c of insomnia).
The thing is, with your background of drug & alcohol use, Doctors will probably not give you the medicine to help w/ ADHD because most of them are Schedule II abuse prone stimulants like Ritalin, Dexedrine (d-amphetamine) or Adderall.
It is safer for them to give you "dumb drug" mood stabilizers like Depakote or Lithium that make you want to sleep all day.
The only real way to tell is to take the comprehensive tests for ADHD or get a SPECT scan done.
