Good evening veteran-poster Kat,
There's nothing wrong with taking over-the-counter sedatives to produce sleep at night, unless you have an underlying anxiety disorder that is causing the insomnia (which needs treatment other than a sedative). Diphenhydramine and doxylamine succinate have been proven to be safe and benign in the long-term--I saw an article on OTC sedatives and hypnotics. These two medications have certainly been in use for a very long time, so we know what their effects are. Their anticholinergic effects are weak, thus there is little dry mouth, constipation, or tachycardia with them.
Take a maximum of 50 mg of diphenhydramine at bedtime. Another idea is to possibly use 100 mg of Valerian root at bedtime.
