Drinking and Anxiety/Panic

I had a few panic attacks when I was drinking but I drank alcoholically. I also suffer from depression and had a MAJOR panic attack in the middle of the night last February. I was put on Effexor at that time and the result has been good. I had been more depressed than I realized.

My feeling is that if you have "abnormal" brain chemistry and you drink, you are not helping matters and you limit the healing effect any med might offer. Drinking away anxiety leads to more anxiety as part of the rebound.

I had to get help for my drinking before I could put anything together for my depression. On Jan. 1 I celebrated 10 years of being clean and sober and my life is much, much improved.

Also, though it can be a challenge, sticking with a SSRI long enough to get over some of the early discomfort (side effects) might helpt to get you to a better place.
