I personally have never used it.

I seen patients with BP's of 200/120 with symptoms of chest pain, shortness of breath respond very well to just 0.1 mg clonidine. Usually we see a response within 30 to 60 minutes. Occassionally, we will give a second dose in thirty minutes if the blood pressure is still high. It is really just used for hypertensive crisis and opiate withdrawal because for long term use ... some people experience moderate sedation and can have reversable sexual dysfunction.
But like most MAOI users have mentioned, some MAOI diet lists can be over-restrictive. It has been four years for me and not one hypertensive episode. Two years ago I started in back on one or two slices of pizza, beer-bottled, soy sauce on my sushi.
It really is too bad many physicians are scared because of the Libby Zion case to prescribe MAOI's. "Sidney Zion sued New York Hospital and four doctors for medical malpractice for the alleged wrongful death of his daughter in 1984. The plaintiff argued that Libby Zion's death was caused by the negligence of doctors who gave her the drug Demerol which can be fatal when taken with Nardil, an anti-depressant, that Libby Zion told doctors she was taking. The defense argued Libby Zion failed to tell doctors that she used cocaine and other prescription drugs and that this prevented them from providing appropriate care." They are so effective for many refractory patient.
Keep us updated Ross.
