In reply to Provigil..what is it good for?, posted by ross on December 26, 2001, at 21:48:18
Ross, I don't take Provigil (modafinil) but do take Olmifon (adrafinil) - same family & possibly the same effects, though Provigil's been studied more for treatment of sleep disorders.
I was just reading yesterday a study done on adrafinil, & one of the two metabolites from adrafinil is modafinil anyway & it's thought that perhaps most of the effects of adrafinil may be due to modafinil as a metabolite. I'll give you an idea of what it does for me, but because a user's chemistry can vary & the disorders we suffer from may be completely different.
Adrafinil stimulates me but in a way completely different from Dexedrine (Adderall) & Ritalin. It gives me an alertness, focus, & awakefulness but without NONE of the slightly jittery feeling I get with the other stims, like I can't hold still once I get going. Because I have ADHD (among other things), I find stims gives me a focus but on everything. Kind of like a hearing aid helping a person hear better, but not just conversations - everything is louder & it's harder to pick out individual sounds. Well, stims makes everything for me seem brighter & more alert but not in a disciplined way. I can flit like a hummingbird from one thing to another without actually accomplishing much. Adrafinil lets me calmly focus on what I'm doing & actually complete projects too. It's a very calm, mellow alertness. I don't feel super-hyper on it like stims.
I find that longer term effects from adrafinil also include a more restful sleep. I normally wake 3-8 times a night & after being on adrafinil for about 3 weeks, I started waking only once or twice. Once I slept through the whole night - first time I EVER recall doing that, even as a child! Mind you, while I always had trouble sleeping deeply or for long, I could still fall asleep in the daytime even after taking Dexedrine - I could sleep through a dose if it wasn't real high. With adrafinil, I no longer was sleeping & yawning constantly, I stayed awake & bright through the entire day.
My memeory also improved immensely. Perhaps not so much long term (I haven't been on it long enough), but my short-term, or working memory as I call it, is now very good. I no longer need to tape up notes for myself all over the house. I simply remember! No longer do I feel scatter-brained.
For me, everything about adrafinil (& presumably modafinl) is absolutely wonderful!! No side-effects, nothing! I never realised how it felt to be "normal" before. To me, alertness always meant hyper & jumpy, while calm meant almost asleep. I never knew the two could go together. I have been on Xanax (alprazolam) & Dexedrine at the same time & it gives me a feeling similar to the combination but with *motivation*, something I've never had before. And the alertness & motivation is even & level. It doesn't wear off through the day but next morning before I take my pill again, I still feel mellow yet alert.
Please excuse me for running on so long but I'm still blown away with how fantastic it works for me. I'm sure many wouldn't get the same benefit due to physical differences, but I can't say enough good about it.
Here's the study on adrafinil, if you're interested:
