In reply to Insulin and feeling shitty, posted by geno on December 20, 2001, at 18:23:06
Insulin lowers blood sugar levels. It is a hormone that the pancreas makes. Some people put out too much insulin when they eat sugar. The result is that after the initial sugar "rush," the blood sugar levels drop too low (because of the resulting insulin surge) and the person feels sick (headachey, shaky, light headed, nauseous, etc). When the blood sugar is low, a person often feels really hungry. So, that could be why a little while after eating sugar, you get really hungry again. My experience is that chomium helped a little, but it didn't allow me to go on pastry binges without repercussions. I have to watch my sugar intake, and I have to be careful not to consume sugar and caffeine at the same time. Caffeine can exacerbate hypoglycemia. For some reason, a steady exercise program has helped me with this problem a lot. If you're eating a lot of sweets, an exercise program might be a good idea anyway < g >.
> Hello, i need a clarity on the effects of insulin. For instance, if i indulge in a sugarry food or simple carb, i find 30 minutes later i feel like shit! also how does this effect seratonin and hunger? i find i get really hungry and irritable then indulge in a piece of pie or whatever, then feel worse after.
