I have an odd problem with Geodon that I'm hoping someone can relate to. I was on 5 mg of Zyprexa before I began taking Geodon a few months ago (I'm bipolar II) and I'm supposed to be taking 80 mg a day (40 mg + 40 mg). About 3-4 hours after taking the morning dose of Geodon, I suddenly get so tired that I fall asleep in a chair and nap for at least a half hour. When I take the evening dose, I get so wound up that I can't sleep, even though I take it with 2.5 mg of Zyprexa. Then I cut the morning dose down to 20 mg, but I still needed to nap. I then tried to switch Zyprexa to a morning, instead of evening, dose. I still had to nap and then at night, the insomnia got worse. I moved the Zyprexa back to evening and quit the morning dose of Geodon. Now I'm wide awake day AND night. I just can't figure out how the same med that makes me sleepy with the first dose, can give me insomnia with the second dose. I'm not sleepy prior to taking the first dose nor in the first few hours after taking the first dose. If anything, it seems like the first dose should energize me and the second dose that I take with Zyprexa should be the sedative one. Has anyone else had this problem?
I've never had trouble with Zyprexa making me tired, although I sleep very well on it. (Rather than abruptly switch me to Geodon, my pdoc was keeping me on a half dose of Zyprexa while I adjusted to Geodon.) If it wasn't for the associated weight gain I've experienced, I would have no complaints staying on Zyprexa. I had high hopes for Geodon, but now I've gotten discouraged and wonder if I should just give up on it. I'd appreciate any comments.
