In reply to Paxil anyone??, posted by Denett on December 1, 2001, at 4:54:00
Hi there,
Paxil was definitely one-stop shopping for me for depression and anxiety. I'm sensitive to drugs, so it only took 10 mg for me to get a huge improvement in anxiety and depression. In fact, the improvement in anxiety was apparent within a week.
Perhaps because of the low dose I was on, I didn't have bad side effects. No constipation that I recall. I needed to make sure I took it about 4 hours before I wanted to go to sleep because that's when an amazingly strong sedative effect would kick in. My stamina for exercise was really decreased at first, but that improved after the first 2 months and I was able to work out again. I was lucky in that I gained no weight, again maybe because of the low dose, or maybe because I wasn't on it for a hugely long time.
Unfortunately it pooped out after 7 months or so, and it was too sedating when I increased the dose. So I moved on to other things and am now in the world of anticonvulsants. But I have friends who have done very well with it and really liked it. I have one who has absolutely no side effects from it and it makes such an unbelievable difference in her mental state. For others, the sexual side effects have been a problem.
Yes, it's a pain to get off of. I had "head zaps" for a week or so while tapering off. It was really annoying but not horrid. If I accidentally missed a dose for only one day, I didn't notice it.
Anyway, that was my experience with it. Some love it, some don't tolerate it well.
Regards,
Emme
