I understand completely.
I have a pretty sensible doctor. He says that not taking medication has certain side effects just like taking medication has certain side effects. It's up to me which side effects I'd rather have. (I'm paraphrasing here and I'm sure I'm not representing him accurately enough.)
That was a real moment of clarity for me. My previous pdocs were in search of the Holy Grail of medication combos. And they would never admit to the downside of medications (or they would just add another medication to counteract any side effects).
My choice has been to use those medications (Depakote & Klonopin) I need to keep me alive and functional. Those goals are worth just about any side effects. I guess everyone has to define their own goals and the side effects they are willing to tolerate.
