Recently, the maker of topiramate (Topamax), Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceuticals, Inc., sent out a "Dear Healthcare Professional" letter to all doctors and prescribers informing them of the potential for the serious form of eye disease called glaucoma.
As of August 17, 2001 there have been 23 reported cases of glaucoma (in more than 825,000 patients) due to Topamax. Twenty-two of these patients are adults and 1 pediatric patient.
The symptoms have typically occurred within the first month of treatment, with patients reporting an acute onset of decreased visual acuity (blurred vision) and/or ocular (eye) pain.
If the patients develop this symptoms, the primary treatment to reverse the symptoms is discontinuation of Topamax as rapidly as possible, according to the judgment of the treating patient. If this condition is left untreated, it can lead to serious complication including permanent blindness.
Patients taking Topamax should notify their doctor immediately if they experience blurred vision or eye pain.
If you notice things becoming fuzzy, less clear or having eye pain since you started taking Topamax, notify your doctor ASAP. You may need an eye exam done.
> Hi. I'm on Zyprexa 10mg, Neurontin 900mg, and my pdoc just added Topamax 50mg for weight control. I've read some disturbed reports about cases were glaucoma was caused by topamax -- I am noticing changes in my vision, should I be concerned? things aren't fuzzzy -- they just look different, it's hard to describe. Things are clear, but different. how do I know when I should be concerned? what exactly does blurred vision mean? does it mean things become fuzzy? less clear?
> I'm sooooooooooooo paranoid over this!~ HEELP!!!
