From my basic knowledge, and use of the drug, the literature indicates usual noticeable changes over 4-6 weeks. But, some people feel a difference within a few days to a week, as the TCA's other side-effects can help with sleep and even anxiety. It is all individual, though, and you should stick with it for a good 4-6 weeks to judge a fair benefit. TCA's got a bad rap when the SSRI's came around (side-effects, mostly), but seem to be coming back for a variety of cases.
No med has been proven, overall, superior to Imipramine, except in terms of side-effects.Just a note. My Dad has done amazingly well, now on his 10'th year on Doxepin (a TCA). For folks who hit the "treatment resistent" wall, TCA's are a very viable avenue to explore, and try *every* one if possible. They are all not the same, and seem to even have more distinctions than the SRI class of meds. (Between meds, that is. As in between Protriptyline and Elavil. Pro is stimulating, while Elavil is sedating.)
Good luck...and hang in there, you might really be surprised.
