Provigil is pretty new in the U.S., it came out in 1998.
Provigil is the brand name; the generic name is modafinil.

It is FDA approved for narcolespy (a disease where people fall asleep
sort of suddenly, it could happen when they are driving or whenever),
and basically is used in general to help people be more alert and awake during the day.

Provigil is not "controlled" like Ritalin and Cylert. It is considered to have some
mild addictive properties but not enough for it to be controlled as such.

For info on it you can type it in on Google and check out some of the sites.
Also at Medline. You can see a link there from a website I recently started
making, at http://www.socialfear.com/

At Medline, just type "modafinil" at the search prompt.

I have also tried Ritalin and Effexor (not Cylert).
I also find those meds to be anxiety provoking unless they are
combined with something (ie; Xanax).

In any case I *DEFINITELY* recommend trying Provigil. I was looking for something
much like yourself; just to increase energy induced by medication without increasing anxiety.
If 1 doctor won't let you try it another one might. Many doctors don't have much
experience with it yet, but they will eventually I think...

Now, Provigil is currently also being studied for treatment of
depression, attention deficit disorder, and Alzheimers!!

(I am waiting for an announcedment of a SOCIAL PHOBIA trial!!!) :)

Good luck - would be interested to here if you are able to give it a try.

> No, I haven't tried it (Provigil). I'm not entirely sure what it is. I used to be a alcohol/drug abuser (to self medicate, but I lost control over it). Is Provigil something that a doctor would be afraid to prescribe to a recovering addict. I'm really interested to hear more about Provigil...especially since you say it causes little anxiety. I've tried Cylert, Ritilin (by a brave doctor), Wellbutrin, and Effexor, and the anxiety on those was too much. Something for fatigue/tiredness that didn't cause anxiety would be a godsend!
