I've had to resume my use of Effexor XR, since my depression seems to have come back 1000 times worse than the mania. BTW, my mania is mostly dysphoric, irritable type, but I do get the "inflated-hyper-ego" before the crash often.
I can only tolerate between 37.5mg and 75mg of Effexor XR, and have made the bold move up to to 75mg after a very, very stressful month. Now, the manic symptoms have returned, so as in the past, I have resumed Depakote. It is the only med that puts a quick cap on the mania, as the other a.c's just don't seem to cut it. Also, Risperdal and Seroquel add to the mania, rather than calm me down. Mind you,I still haven't tried Zyprexa. I am a bit tired of changing meds round and round, because that seems to lead to further problems. Effexor XR has been the only med to touch my depression, and I am sticking with it. I'll save the Zyprexa if my further plans don't work out. I find adding meds even best.
I am going to take my surrest bet and lower the Effexor back down to 37.5mg, add Ativan 2x a day. If it doesn't keep my mood up enough, I will go back to Effexor XR 75mg, plus Depakote, and/or Zyprexa. I have tried Neurontin in the past, and it had no where near the mood stabalizing effect as Depakote. (For me, anyway.)
So, that is my experience...I hope you can find some relation.:-) I don't think Depakote is the "cleanest" med going, hence all the side effects, but for squashing mania (especially drug induced), I think it works excellent. IMHO....
All the best...
Jay :-)
