In reply to performance anxiety and beta blockers, posted by Larry O on September 28, 2001, at 21:29:08
I know atenolol is often prescribed for performance anxiety. I don't perform, but I find 25 mg really helpful for regular anxiety control and don't seem to have any side effects from it. Perhaps your regular doctor could try you out on a beta blocker, or did you already try your regular doctor? If you need to go to a psychiatrist to get it, it seems as though he/she ought to be able to learn enough in an ordinary hour-long initial interview to be able to prescribe for you. Of course that is an expensive appointment - do you have insurance coverage to help you with that? Good luck.
Emme> I have a major performance anxiety problem, and would like to see if beta blockers could help me. But every time I call a psychiatrist, I am told it will take a lot of time and a lot of money before they can discuss any kind of medication. I know a lot of musicians use beta blockers regularly without all of this expense. What am I doing wrong?
