I've tried a lot of meds but thought that my symptoms which included depression, mania (never psychotic) and lots of anxiety in some ways looked like ADD, that is I couldn't concentrate etc etc. I saw a doctor who agreed that Dex was worth a try.

Alex,Suggest to your doctor about getting a blood workup done to check your thyroid function, you need to rule out a general medical condition as a cause. Sometimes panic attacks can be a result of that.
