In reply to ne1 really helped by herb? cayenne, ginko, sjw, , posted by nutsy on September 3, 2001, at 9:51:34
A few years ago I tried 5HTP in combination with St Johnswort. I was taking 150mg 5HTP and 900mg SJW. In just one week it was working wonders. But I had a very strange side effect which caused me to stop. It was some sort of burning urination sensation, including a burning sensation with orgasm, similar to what might be expected if you were expelling sand or pieces of glass. None of my doctors could ever explain it. I've never heard of anyone else experiencing that weird side effect. But aside from that very nasty side effect, the combination of St Johnswort plus 5HTP had a dramatic and fast improvement on my mood.
I have spoken with several other people who did real well with just SJW. They all eventually quit due to some reason or another. One person lost their sense of taste while on SJW. Another experienced the dreaded poopout effect. Another was too tired all the time. Another was too hyper all the time.
Gingko, ginsengs, valerian, etc I found to be either neutral or only mildly helpful. Out of the whole universe of herbs that I have tried, the only ones that really worked were 5HTP+SJW combination. But the weird side effects. Geez.
I think the moral of the story is that herbs can indeed work, some a lot more so than others, but their mechanisms and side effects can be a mystery. In many cases the side effects can be as troubling as presciption meds.
John> kava kava, valerian, etc.? Curious if anyone has been able to do well without scripts simply utilizing herbal products.

> Curious thing has been garlic - eating it provides a nice lift and mild euphoria.
