Goodwin, Frederick MD, Discussant. A 47-Year-Old Man With Chronic Depression. JAMA. 275(6):479-485, February 14, 1996:

"If no response to venlafaxine is evident, thyroid potentiation (with 15 to 35 microgram of triiodothyronine [T3]) could be used, [23] assuming that Mr N's pretreatment thyroid screen did not indicate preexisting hyperthroidism. Mr N's diabetes will need to be carefully monitored during the trial, since his glucose control may be affected. With this trial, if no improvement is seen within 10 to 14 days, T3 should be gradually tapered and withdrawn. Another potentiation strategy, which in clinical practice can be carried out simultaneously with thyroid potentiation, is the addition of a modest dose of lithium carbonate (600 mg), shown to potentiate response to a variety of antidepressants, including tricyclics, MAOIs, SSRIs, bupropion, and venlafaxine."

Rothschild, Anthony J. MD.. Advances in the management of depression: Implications for the obstetrician/gynecologist. American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology. 173(2):659-666, August 1995:

"The addition of lithium carbonate or thyroid hormone (T3) to an antidepressant is a popular strategy for treating patients who are nonresponders or partial responders to antidepressants. [58,59] Although clinical experience has suggested that the addition of T3 is less efficacious than lithium carbonate, a recent double-blind, placebo- controlled study found that lithium carbonate and T3 were equally effective (and both were more effective than placebo) when added to a TCA. [60]."
