In reply to smiling tic side effect??, posted by cb on August 18, 2001, at 18:57:50
> My son seems to have developed a smiling "tic" - he finds himself smiling and sometimes laughing. He can't control this and it does not match his emotions - he is in fact depressed and anxious. Has anyone ever heard of this as a side effect from bp meds? He is on wellbutrin (400 mg), zyprexa (10 mg),and lithobid (1800 mgs). thank you, anxious mom
Hi anx. mom,
You could ask his doctor if his lithium blood level has been checked to make sure he is not becoming toxic on it-1800mg is a little on the high side for most people. The highest dose I ever took was 1500mg and I had a lot of side effects, I think my blood level was above 1.2 mEq/L.
The Zyprexa could be interacting with the lithium and producing some form of neurotoxic effects. Lithium combined with other antipsychotics has done this such as haloperidol. Hypomania also has been reported with the atypical antipsychotics, most recently with Seroquel.
Also, Wellbutrin being like a stimulant as much as an AD could also be causing a "tic" because some people (esp. children) develop tics or experienced worsened tics when they take psychostimulants for ADHD.
sorry you are having this difficult time,
Mitch
