Futzing with Doses of AD's Yourself

Posted by Kingfish on August 18, 2001, at 9:22:38

I have a question about futzing with doses of meds yourself.

This last week I fell into a bad, bad, bad depressive cycle again. The cycles between depression and mania seem to be getting shorter and shorter.

I was at the point Friday morning where I wanted to be hospitalized - I can't recall being at that point before.

Friday @noon, I decided to take 10 extra mg of Prozac. Within a couple of hours, I felt better. My head did that "breathing a sigh of relief" thing.

I know it takes a while for your body to get adjusted to AD's, but once it does, can you then add a certain amount for an immediate effect? If so, does this mean when I'm going into a depressive cycle, I can take more Prozac, and when I'm getting manic, I can take less? Or, I can take more of a mood stabilizer to counter-act the AD effect?

I'm going to see my pdoc in a few days so this is not something I'm going to do on my own indefinitely, just was curious for some feedback.

Thanks!

- K.
