Hi Jane.
I used to take Propecia for 3 years (I am a male) but switched to Regaine (5% Mynoxydil (spelling?)) because of sexual effects of propecia. Regaine can be used by both males and females and I found it even more effective than propecia. However, you must manually apply it twice per day, which is more of a hassle than just taking a pill. Also it makes your hair a bit greasy. (I actually like this property because I can style it better!)
A monthly supply costs about the same as that of propecia and is available over the counter at drug stores. You can also get 3-month supplies which are cheaper again. You must be patient with it: although I found it stopped hair loss fairly quickly it took a couple of months before I noticed regrowth occurring.
Overall I am very happy with it and recommend it.Hope this helps.
