The only way "around this problem", and it's not a complete fix, is to titrate up really slowly.

My experience with Topamax has been positive, for what it's worth. I had the cognitive problems for about a month or so even after I hit 250 mg, so it is a side effect, but it subsided then and it's been very helpful except for sedation with me. I haven't heard of anyone else having that problem though.

If you can handle feeling rather "drunk" for awhile (i.e. if it doesn't interfere with a job) it might still work for you).
