Bob - I don't believe that aspartame enters the body (ie. it stays in the GI tract) and is not metabolized. Basically, it goes right through you. When in doubt, don't ingest it. I avoid aspartame containing drinks, not because of any medical concerns; I avoid it out of politeness for those around me (it gives me bad gas).

I haven't read any studies of researchers measuring the amount of asparatame that goes into a body, is the same that comes out, but I am sure the studies have been done, probably in the approval phase.
