Avoid grapefruit juice if you are taking alprazolam (Xanax). Grapefruit juice increases the blood level of Xanax (via cytochrome enzyme [CYP3A4] inhibition) with eventual increased in side effects. Grapefruit juice has similar effects on a number of other drugs such as buspirone (BuSpar), cholesterol-lowering drugs, certain blood pressure medications, drugs for HIV, anti-rejection drugs (e.g., cyclosporine), etc. Check the following excellent website for a more detailed description of Grapefruit juice - drug interactions, authored by a Canadian pharmacist:
