Kirk, Julienne K. PharmD. Johnson, Scott H. MD. Safe Discontinuation of Antihypertensive Therapy. Archives of Family Medicine. 4(3):266-270, March 1995:
"Manifestations of Antidepressant Withdrawal Syndrome (AWS) often resemble those encountered in patients with sympathetic hyperactivity. Subjective symptoms usually begin during the first 12 to 72 hours after cessation of treatment [4,5]. Commonly experienced central nervous system effects include nervousness, agitation, insomnia, anxiety, and headaches [1,6,7]. Gastrointestinal effects range from mild nausea to anorexia, abdominal cramps, and vomiting. Other symptoms are sweating, palpitations, tremor, and fatigue. The observable signs of withdrawal frequently include tachycardia, increased blood pressure, and diaphoresis. In some cases, elevations have been noted in urinary catecholamine concentrations [8]. Withdrawal symptoms have been reported to persist for periods varying from 2 to 7 days [1,6,7]. While these symptoms resolve spontaneously with time, restarting the original antihypertensive therapy relieves both signs and symptoms rapidly...
To discontinue beta-blocker therapy, the dose should be reduced over a 7- to 10-day period to a dose equivalent to 30 mg/d of propranolol hydrochloride and then maintained at the same dose for 2 weeks to prevent AWS..."
