Amy Blue - just thought I'd throw my two cents in also! To me, it sounds like it could be anxiety bordering on psychosis, based on the experience of someone I know who also had these symptoms and was diagnosed as having "depression with psychotic tendencies" (he was getting ideas like water from the shower wasn't real).
Then again, I've been diagnosed (although I didn't need it, I KNOW it!) with extreme anxiety and have had period where I've felt not alive, totally depersonalized, outside my body, obssesive/racing/irrational/worrisome thoughts.
Paxil and Klonopin used to snap me out of it, but when they pooped out, a low dose of Zyprexa seems to have done the trick. Apparently anti-psychotics and anti-convulsants can work for anxiety and as mood stabilizers! Many people indeed do take a low dose to augment anti-depressants.
Again, just my two cents!
