In Europe Adrafinil is used to treat depression and is supposedly said to be better than SSRIs. In my own personal experience with, I find it most helpful with dysthymia and anhedonia. Motivation and interest in activities is the result. I have found it works best for me when combined with Prozac. Adrafinil is a stimulant, but in many ways it is not like other stimulants. It takes days to weeks for the mild stimulation to kick in.

Adrafinil looked appealing to me for the very reasons you mentioned. It turned out to be as good as hoped. Not everyone who has tried it has had success however. Like everything, mileage varies. I think it all depends on whether norepinephrine circuits and dopamine D2 circuits are at the root of the symptoms.

To me, this smart-drug is appealing because it mimics the neurotransmitter unlike conventional antidepressants will allow the little neurotransmitter of a depressed person to circulate for a few months due to re-uptake/MAO inhibition before relapse back into despair-in my experience.
