In reply to effexor and prozac?? fatal combo?, posted by MicheleR on October 2, 2000, at 21:37:02
searching the internet, this forum always comes up for these issues of concern for me. kudos to dr bob. a little late to this thread, but i was glad to see it, and the 'seratonin syndrome' posts.
was taking zoloft for a few years, stopped cold, and got the zaps and electric shocks and feeling faint like i might pass out but never did.
started prozac, and doc thinks maybe it's stopped working, so we added effexor, in small doses then up to 150, while cutting the prozac in half.
suddenly, a couple weeks after starting with effexor, i began these 'withdrawal' symptoms again and today they continue to peak. these feelings, culled from previous posts:
- "zaps" in the brain
- when going up and down stairs
- when turning the head / eyes right-to-left
- or when doing nothing at all
- new: lips tingling and slightly numbmy doctor and i both are at a loss. is this withdrawel from prozac? unheard of, right? and, i'm still taking it.
is this an effexor side effect? but why, when i'm starting it, should i have a withdrawal effect?
is this some combination of the two drugs?
someone referred in a previous post to the seratonin syndrome as 'too much seratonin too fast' -- if i'm adding another antidepressent to an existing one, that maybe makes sense.
why though would this be the syndrome upon withdrawal?... i don't get it. and, can this syndrome actually cause you to pass out or worse? does it really go away? (these posts seem to say yes and not even after months)
and i'd like to hear if anyone else has this problem when ADDING antidepressants to eachother...
thanks in advance; this forum, again, is a lifesaver.
