According to Geodon's official monograph, somnolence is less likely than with Risperdal. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case for me; I had a lot of drowsiness with Geodon, but no cognitive problems as evidenced by my usual musical ability.
Zyprexa might be a good choice for your son, considering it is effective and approved specifically for treating mania this year. I never had any side-effects on Zyprexa, and it helps with depression by working on serotonin receptors.
