Interesting observation: Four double-blind studies with fluoxetine, 20 mg/day, resulted in a lot of efficacy and relative lack of side effects. Two open long-term studies have demonstrated the efficacy of fluoxetine over an extended period of time. In one of these studies, all 21 women who discontinued fluoxetine after 2 years found that their symptoms returned and thus resumed fluoxetine treatment. Many women anecdotally report using fluoxetine in partial-cycle (luteal) administration or taking lower doses during the follicular phase with an increase in dose during the luteal phase:
