In reply to Serotonin increase causes dopamine decrease?, posted by PhoenixGirl on April 24, 2001, at 16:44:53
I hypothesized this back when I was experimenting with 5-HTP. Taking 5-HTP seemed to decrease the high from opium tea and marijuana very noticeably.
However, zoloft doesn't seem to be affecting it as much. My guess is that it's more complicated than just a balance between the two neurotransmitters- at least for most people.
> I've read that an increase in the activity of serotonin, from drugs like ssri's, causes a decrease in the activity of dopamine. Could someone clarify? I would like to know if this effect on dopamine is long-term, lasting even after the serotonin drug is stopped.
