I spoke to a representative at Pfizer today. I was told that ziprasidone will appear on pharmacists' shelves towards the middle of next week.
Ziprasidone, under the brand name "Geodon" is a neuroleptic antipsychotic that is very similar to Zyprexa. One of the main advantages of Geodon is that it is said not to produce weight-gain.
Although Geodon has been developed and tested for its effectiveness in treating schizophrenia, there is hope that it might also help treat difficult cases of resistant depression by filling a role similar to Risperdal and Zyprexa. Both of these drugs have worked wonders for some people when used in conjunction with antidepressants. Geodon might even be a better drug for depression due to its unique action at a specific kind of serotonin receptor.
