In reply to St. John's Wort: Does it help ocd and depression?, posted by elderweissblue on February 28, 2001, at 8:04:15
SJW helps some people with depression. The starting dose is 900 mg per day with each pill standardized to 0.3% hypericum. It should say that on the bottle. You can either take 3 pills per day of 300 mg each. Or 2 pills per day of 450 mg each.
Some people take up to double the above amounts in order to get satisfactory results. The side effects are possibly more skin sensitivity to the sun. And it may make birth control pills less effective.
It's important to realize that it takes several months to reach a full benefit with St John's Wort. If your depression is really bad or if you need quicker results, you should ask your doctor about prescription drugs. They are relatively safe as well as effective.
> I have thoughts that have an obssessive quality about them. They can cause selfdoubt and distress. Its hard to stop thinking and pondering sometimes, I often feel Iam in my own world. Iam such a day dreamer! No, there are no hallucinations or voices involved. There is also depression in this. I have negative thoughts also. Sometimes I just wait until I am "burned out". I want to know if there are people out there who have had good results from taking St.John's wort for these problems. Ive been told that it is heavily prescribed in Germany. What can it do for me?
